The Great Dictator. This is the speech at the end of Charlie Chaplin’s film which always used to make me both laugh and cry. I showed it to lots of my students who were often a bit puzzled by my emotional response to it. Recently – since 2010 or so – I’ve felt less comfortable with Chaplin’s portrayal of Hitler, but I still find this speech moving.
